Zonta Club 11’s Emergency Healthcare Project to help save lives!

When the Kalubowila Teaching, Hospital made an urgent appeal for oxygen regulators as the number of COVID-19 patients in their wards was increasing drastically, the Zonta Club II moved swiftly to help.

Spurred by the thought that ‘a life saved is a family saved’, the Club members rallied to respond to this urgent appeal through an Emergency Healthcare Project. The project commenced on 6th August with an appeal to members to mobilize the Zonta network and contribute whatever they could. The response was overwhelming. Within just three days, they had enough funds to purchase the oxygen flow meters for the Kalubowila hospital. The appeal continued to go viral and with the trusted name of Zonta known worldwide, contributions flowed in from overseas and Sri Lanka.

In the first phase of the project, 20 oxygen flow meters each costing Rs 35,000 were donated on the 12th of August 2021 to the Kalubowila Hospital. A portable Ventilator Flight 60 valued at Rs 2,200,000 was donated on the 19th of August. Ventilator Flight 60 can be transported easily between wards or hospitals and can be used as both an invasive and non-invasive ventilator. The total donation value amounted to Rs 2,900,000.

Phase II of the project

which focused on helping the Ragama Hospital saw donations of a BIPAP ventilator ResMed Stellar valued at Rs 1,240,000 being donated on the 15th of August. This was followed by the donation of a High Flow Nasal Oxygen (HFNO) delivering machine valued at Rs 1,200,000 on the 27th of August. And another Oxygen Flow Splitter costing Rs 130,000 to the hospital.

In Phase III with the Panadura Hospital, where Zonta Club II of Colombo’s flagship project -the MithuruPiyasa Counselling Centre is in operation, the Club has donated a BIPAP ventilator ResMed Stellar valued at Rs 1,240,000 and an Oxygen Flow Splitter costing Rs 130,000.

The District Hospital Nivithigala also received a Desktop Oximeter valued at Rs 110,000 on the 23rd of August 2021.
