ICMME 2021 brought together mathematicians and educators from Sri Lanka and overseas

The International Conference in Mathematics and Mathematics Education (ICMME) was held at the University of Peradeniya’s Post Graduate Institute of Science (PGIS) recently. It was a research conference that combines research from pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematics education.

The goal of including all aspects of mathematics was to bring together a broad spectrum of researchers and educators to a common venue and so they could share their experiences, insights, and ideas to improve their respective fields.

ICMME 2021 was an educational event with unprecedented national significance and an international event that featured speakers from Singapore, USA and Sri Lanka. It was organised by PGIS and the Education Ministry.

Four internationally acclaimed keynote speakers graced the event; Prof. Rathnasingham Shivaji of the

University of North Carolina at Greensborough in USA, Prof. K. Vajravelu of the University of Central Florida in USA, Dr Upali Mampitiya of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) and Dr Boon Liang Chua of the National Institute of Education in Singapore.

By inviting four keynote speakers under the two main disciplines of the conference, the organisers strived to bridge the two disciplines to initiate a positive and robust collaboration between mathematicians and educators that would lead to an enhancement of mathematics education in schools and universities across the countries.

There were more than 60 presentations throughout the day. There was ample time for the participants to engage in fruitful discussion about their research findings and their perspective on mathematics education. The conference went on for two days.

PGIS is a national institute that advances research and education of post-graduate students.
