Theatre is back

Following the closure of the country with Covid-19 pandemic like anything else one of the worst affected fields was theatre which had to be functioned with public gathering. However with the relaxation of many areas, theatre too has come back to life and one of the first initiatives to attract drama lovers, a theatre festival will kick off from Friday December 3 at 3.30 pm and 7 pm at the Lionel Wendt theatres in Colombo.

The festival will kick off with the late Jayalath Manorathne’s popular play “Thala Mala Pipila”, a social criticism on education, art and culture on December 3.

Played by Rathna Lalani Jayakody, Prasannajith Abesooriya, Sampath Thennakoon, Jagath Benaragama, Sarath Chandrasiri, Ajith Lokuge, Wasantha Vittachchi, Jayantha Muthuthanthree and Ishara Wickramasinghe the music direction of the play is by Rohana Weerasinghe.

On December 4, award winning playwright Chamila Priyanka’s new play “Sanga Weda Guru Govi Kamkaru” will go on the boards. A play, a critic on the present political culture is played by Kaushalya Fernando, Xavier Kanishka, Mayura Kanchana, Nilanka Dahanayake, Yashoda Rasaduni, Sanjaya Hettiarachchi, Thilina Perera, Pramod Edirisinghe, and Thivanka Don Ranasinghe.

R. R. Samarakoon’s ever popular “Kelani Palama” will be staged on December 5. A group of veteran stars including Ramya Wanigasekara, Geetha Kanthi Jayakody, Prasannajith Abesooriya, Madhani Malwattage, Dimuthu Chinthaka, Prasad Sooriya

Arachchi and Neluka Rekani will be performed.

Organised by Jude Srimal, the theatre festival will be performed in compliance with government’s COVID – 19 regulations and

safety measures.

All seats are box planned and tickets are now available at the theatre gate.
