Lankan youth from NZ dies in bike accident while holidaying in Galle

A Sri Lankan youth employed in New Zealand died this week in a motorcycle accident while on holiday in Galle.

He was identified as Sahan Diluka, a resident of Kahaduwatta.

The accident occurred at the Kahaduwatta junction when Diluka and two pillion riders were returning home in the early hours of Tuesday after buying some kottu roti. Diluka’s mother K. A. Ilangathilaka, a Galle Municipal Council member, said her son had studied at Auckland University and had excelled in hospitality management. He was working as a front office manager at a hotel.

She said Diluka had earlier visited her at the Kalubowila hospital where she was receiving treatment. One of the pillion riders, Kankanam Pathirage Kasun, told the coroner they were speeding and as a result, Diluka's helmut fell off. Suddenly, he said, the motorbike hit a lamp post.

He said Diluka was pronounced dead on admission to hospital. Karapitiya Judicial medical officer B.M.G. Jayaratna said death was due to excessive bleeding from injuries to the skull.
