New shooting range for Sumedha Vidyalaya, Gampaha

A state-of-the-art air rifle and air pistol shooting range, with 12 lanes, was declared open at Sumedha Vidyalaya, Gampaha earlier this week. The shooting range project was a brainchild of the Director of Sumedha Vidyalaya, Dr. Wilfred Wijesinghe, who spearheaded the project also with the intention of training the school’s shooting teams.

The coach of Sumedha Vidyalaya, and a former national shooter and national coach, Retired Senior DIG of Police, Gamini Walgama played an important role in putting up the shooting range with his expertise. Dhammika Kulatunga, the Deputy Director of Western Province Physical Education and Sports of the Western Province Education Department, graced the occasion as chief guest to declare open the 12-range shooting range.

An exhibition shooting competition, with the participation of shooters from Sumedha Vidyalaya and shooters from invited schools from the region, as well as other shooters, was held to mark the official opening of the country’s latest shooting range. Among others who were present at the occasion were representatives from the Western Province Education Department, officials representing Sri Lanka Schools Shooting Sport Association, and shooting officials from the Western Province, as well as former national shooters, and principals and teachers in-charge of sports from Gampaha District.
