By Mithahasini Ratnayake

Bouncing back into the holiday spirit since the pandemic’s undoing of all holiday festivities is the British School of Colombo, who will hold their annual Christmas Carnival and fund-raiser “Frosty Fest”, on December 10 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the school premises on Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo 8.

A great success since 2016, the carnival remains the school’s most anticipated event of the year, bursting with activities, games, performances, shopping and much more. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the school, with the support of the staff and alumni are preparing a Christmas treat for all this year. “There will be something for everyone,” says Trisha Dullu, President of the PTA, pointing out that the wide representation of food alone is a reflection of the 53 countries and multiple communities that make up the school.

Christmas food inevitably comes to mind during the season and varieties of cuisines

ranging from Chinese to Japanese, Vietnamese, Italian, Pakistani, Indian street food, along with the usual comfort food (burgers, pizza, etc) will be on offer.

Additionally, there will be creative vendors coming in from all over Colombo with their best offerings, such as La Crème Ceylon – innovative ice cream cake and desserts with a twist and Artisan Bake Gingerbread House activities (interactive food building sessions, 3D cookies), etc. Other trade stalls include Deola Ventures, Ru Bees (organic honey bees with natural flavouring), Rice & Carry, Baubles & Co (customizable baubles for any

colour themes) and Isle of Raata (traditional handmade crafts with a modern twist).

There will also be a larger variety of Virtual Reality games such as car racing, Just Dance and Cricket as well as a VR console, which is a new addition to this year’s carnival, along with rides and games for children and others of all ages. A Horror House by House of Events will be set up for the first time. The PTA is especially excited to announce the visit of the Transformer ‘Bumble Bee’ for younger kids.

Music and entertainment come in through performances that the students have been eagerly preparing over the past few weeks. “This is what I personally look forward to,” remarks Hannah Wells, Principal of the school, “the students are amazing.”

A large portion of the funds raised will go to charity organizations, orphanages and underprivileged schools, as in previous years. Stalls will also be set up by the students of various clubs and societies at BSC, to send their profits to different organizations they work with on their community projects. “We want this carnival to be a win-win situation,” adds Thimira Wijesiri, PTA Treasurer.

Adding to the excitement of the Carnival is the Raffle Draw (tickets at Rs. 1000), sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines, Jetwing Hotels, Spa Ceylon and many more. The entry ticket for the event is priced at Rs. 1000 with children under five entering free. Tickets will be sold at BSC, the German Bakery and Dinemore in One Galle Face mall. The games prices for children over the age of five are Rs. 2000 and Rs. 500 for those below.
