Gallery for Fareed Uduman: Final tribute from son to father

High amid the treetops of Kirula Road, Colombo 5, Sky Gallery of the Fareed Uduman ArtForum- a permanent exhibition that also comes with a promise to share this space with aspiring artists, will open this week.

The Gallery will be declared open on December 9 by art connoisseur Malaka Talwatte who will thereafter talk about the artist.

It was Fareed’s son Jomo’s dream to create a space to display his father’s entire collection as a permanent exhibition for art lovers. Fareed Uduman painted many startlingly original and (at times) surreal paintings, on hardboard, plywood or on any other material he could lay his hands on. He nailed these to the wall and most ended up behind cupboards and doors cobwebbed, dusty and forgotten.

Jomo has retrieved, restored, named these unsigned, undated works and, over the 37 years since his father’s demise has held four posthumous exhibitions and also published a coffee table book to make his work public.

Fareed’s cartoons are also presented at the Gallery along with ten poems that give a glimpse into his private world.

Jomo says that this final tribute comes with sadness for he “never was recognized for his art, his profound love and what he stood up for in his life. Nobody reached out far enough to free him. But he selflessly reached beyond all parameters to free people from pain …… Now, Sky Gallery of the Fareed Uduman Art Forum will without doubt bring his spirit alive – again.”

SKY Gallery at 65/9, Kirula Road Colombo 5, will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m from December 12. To arrange special viewings for students and groups, please contact: 0777329596.
