When the Cathedral resounded with music and message of the Birth

An enforced Covid pause notwithstanding, news of the choir of the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour’s Advent Sunday programme spread quickly among lovers of choral music.

The choir directed by Ishan de Lanerolle was presenting an Advent Cantata titled ‘Journey of Promises’ last Sunday – a significant date, it being Advent Sunday when Christians begin preparing for Christmas – the birth of their Saviour Jesus Christ.

The stately Anglican Cathedral on Bauddhaloka Mawatha filled up in no time and the choir made its way in silent procession into a darkened church. Joseph R. Martin’s musical is a beautiful rendering of contemporary songs merged with the familiar strains of much loved Christmas carols. The music interspersed by readings from the Bible of God’s promise of deliverance and the lighting of differently coloured Advent candles symbolising the journey from darkness to light, brought home the message of the Birth.

It was a dramatic presentation, just 45 minutes of song, the entire experience enhanced by striking lighting meticulously planned by Ishan. The lighting was by Dhanushka of D4 with Unique Sounds providing the sound with controlling by Neranjan de Silva.

As the Vicar of the Cathedral reminded those present, this was an act of worship and hence there was no applause at the end, just the choir singing the blessing, as those present left the Cathedral with music and the message in their hearts– a meaningful start to Christmas 2022.
