Teaching by example

A Sinhala teacher from Ruwanwella who taught the subject online to Ordinary Level pupils mostly free of charge, and only charging parents who could afford it Rs 800 per month, has used the funds to purchase a bus, which he then donated for charitable purposes.

According to Sinhala instructor K M Harsha Chandarsena, all students received free education throughout the height of the Covid-19 pandemic because they endured so much hardship in school and exams.

“This bus isn't for use in the public transit system. This will be offered to low-income families, people with disabilities, and elderly residents of homes and orphanages for travel,” Mr Chandrasena explained. He added that he will also cover the cost of the food and fuel required for the journey.
