In getting my visa, I was helped to get all my documents in order, and had several mock interviews that helped me enormously.

The first advice I have is to try your best to have contact with other Sri Lankans in USA and get advice from them on how to survive. Second, know what area you will live in. Be thorough with the geography in that area and pick the right place. The environment, culture and people are important. The third is to be punctual and disciplined. If this isn’t there, it is very hard.

Going from Sri Lanka, the expenses in hard. However, part time work even within the campus is available. When it comes to internships, they are mostly full time. These are mainly paid, and paid very well! They are mainly three month or six months internships and are a part of the degree. The university will help you get the internship, but you have to put in the work to find them too.

The main accomplishment I have is learned to survive on my own and take care of myself, from cooking to laundry. This has

helped me become independent and learn the value of money. My friends and I secured internships in our first year and get good positions in the organizations.

Studies are important, but it’s also important to network and explore. I live in a very diverse area and I have friends from all over the world. The way you treat people, they will treat you back. The US is a huge place and there are so many beautiful places to see and explore. So, go out, be open to anything, but remember to be disciplined!”
