What does such recognition mean to Sri Lankan doctors?

Stringent requirements are being introduced by many countries from next year (2024) on foreign doctors who wish to work or foreign postgraduate students of medicine who wish to study in those countries, said SLMC’s AU Head Dr. Palitha Abeykoon.

Citing the United States of America (USA), he says that the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is to apply a rule that such doctors should be from medical schools which have been accredited by a Medical Council which has WFME recognition. The ECFMG is the authorised credential evaluation and guidance agency for nonU.S. physicians and graduates of non-U.S. medical schools who seek to practise in the US or apply for a medical residency programme there.

Australia, New Zealand and Canada are also set to follow suit, he said, adding that the SLMC’s AU securing WFME recognition would help Sri Lankan doctors and postgraduate students to find opportunities in those countries without a problem.
