The bodies of two siblings, 10 and 7 who were washed away on Thursday during a downpour in Hali-Ela, Badulla, were found couple of kilometres a part from each other on Friday.

The two had gone in search of their mother who was late returning home after work when tragedy struck as they were crossing a road and were washed away.

They were both students of Bogoda Vidyalaya.

Malika Neththikumari, 37 told the Sunday Times that she had cooked lunch for her 10-year-old son Umesh Sathsara and 7 year-old daughter Dhasmi Nadeeka and gone to work in a nearby house when heavy rains had come down.

“I telephoned the neighbouring house and told them to keep watch over the children as I was getting

late. However, they were worried that I was late and had decided to come looking for me. Their grandmother had told them not to go out and that I would return, but they had gone," she lamented.

“To return home, I too had to pass this waterway which was gushing across the road. I managed to cross

with some difficulty. When I reached home I was told the children had gone looking for me. During the search that we first came across the umbrella they had used and their slippers," she said.

Her husband is employed in a garment factory in Colombo
