ITF Junior tournaments to showcase rising tennis in Colombo

The vibrant city of Colombo is set to host two consecutive International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tournaments, showcasing the exceptional skills of young tennis players from around the world. Organised by Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), these back-to-back tournaments will provide a platform for aspiring athletes to compete at the highest level and earn valuable ranking points.

The first tournament, Week 1, took place from May 20 to 27 and will be followed by Week 2 from May 27 to June 3. With an overwhelming number of entries, with a total of 113 participants vying for victory, the competition is set to be held with utmost standards. It is noteworthy that over 80 talented foreign players will be participating, adding an exciting international flavour to the event.

Among boys, 40 foreign entries have been received from India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the USA, UK, Japan, Malaysia, China, and Germany while there are 20 entries from Sri Lanka. A total of 53 entries have been received for the girls’ category, in which 41 entries are from India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, USA, Korea, Australia, Malaysia, China, Germany, Sweden, and Japan, in addition to the 12 entries from Sri Lanka. The presence of such a diverse and competitive field promises an exhilarating and enthralling display of tennis prowess.

The tournament’s top-seed player in the Boy’s Singles category is Jacob Kailiang Shen from Hong Kong. In the Girls’ Singles, Raja Sarvagnya Kilaru of India holds the top seed position. Sri Lanka will be represented by its finest players, with Zaid Zihar and Methvan Wijemanne showcasing their skills in the main draw for the boys, while Dinara de Silva and Saajida Razik take the

lead for the girls.

Success at this level provides a pathway for qualification into prestigious Grand Slam events, including Wimbledon, French Open, the US Open, and Australian Open Juniors.

Dharaka Ellawala has been appointed as the Tournament Referee, ensuring the adherence to ITF regulations and fair play throughout the tournaments. Aruna Seneviratne, a respected figure in the tennis community, will serve as the Tournament Director, overseeing the smooth execution of the events. Chammika de Silva will lead the Tournament Desk, coordinating the operational aspects to ensure an exceptional experience for players, officials, and spectators alike.
