Dr. Jayasinghe welcomed the guests at 31st Annual General Meeting of Institute of Hospitality Sri Lanka held last week at Mont Blanc of Movenpick Colombo.

During his address Chairman Jayasinghe stressed the importance of ‘tourism’ in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery procedure. He

said, tourism has always played a significant role in Sri Lanka’s economy. The hospitality industry in Sri Lanka holds tremendous potential for economic growth, job creation, and cultural exchange.

However, most correctly he pointed out the problems faced by the ‘Tourism Industry’ with the limitations infrastructure facilities, sustainable practices and skilled labour shortages.

‘These are the challenges standing against a vibrant and thriving tourism sector’ he added.

‘As I look back on the past year, lack of skilled labour in Sri Lanka's hotel industry and the trend of skilled workers migrating overseas has become the grave problem when it comes to boosting tourism objectives of the Government’.

Many skilled individuals, including chefs, Housekeepers, Food & Beverage and other service staff, are leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad. This brain drain not only leads to a loss of talent/ but also hampers the industry's ability to provide high-quality services and meet the demands of national and international visitors.

This matter highlights the importance of investing in training programmes and the significance of hotel schools in preparing the youth for rewarding careers in the hospitality sector.

‘Moreover, it is essential to invest in training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of those working in the industry, including tour guides, hotel staff, and service providers. By providing quality training and education via SLTDA, CHSGA and Institute of Hospitality Sri Lanka from other relevant Institutions, we can ensure that our visitors have a memorable experience, leading to positive reviews and recommendations, ultimately boosting tourism’ Jayasinghe said.

IH, CSHGA, NAITA & TVEC help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students are exposed to real-world scenarios and industry-specific challenges, enabling them to develop problem-solving abilities and adaptability. We are collaborating with established hotels and resorts, providing students with internship opportunities that further enhance their practical skills and expose them to the inner workings of the industry.

In 2022, IH Sri Lanka has taken an active role in organizing training programmes covering different sections of the Hospitality Industry. In 2022/2023 region-wise trainings were conducted for Hotel Staffs and Military Personnel on Food & Beverage, Housekeeping and Front Office services.
