Detecting the culprit

Public Health Inspectors are assigned the task of inspecting households, public and private sector institutions, parks, construction sites for dengue breeding spots as the mosquitoborne dengue fever is spreading rapidly.

About 20 deaths and 40,000 cases have been reported this year. Health authorities warn that monsoonal rains and more breeding sites will result in this years' deaths and cases exceeding last year's 72 deaths and 76,000 cases. Dengue is currently rampant in the Gampaha and Colombo districts.

Following the President's directive, the military and Police are assisting in dengue prevention programmes, with special attention given to populated urban flats where a single mosquito can spread the disease to many.

From fumigating to applying Bti mosquito dunks, warning and taking legal action against repeat offenders, the coming weeks will see many dengue prevention activities.
